Play any instrument or speak any language, which do you choose?
Question submitted by cruftbox.vox.com.
My answer actually is that this is a bogus question, since they are both the same thing, produced with different tools.
Other than that bit of intellectualism, I tend to prefer the weird ones. Like speaking tamachek while playing the saw.
What's the strongest association you have between a scent and a memory?
Up until fifth grade I lived in Brooklyn and went to a school a few blocks away from my house. There were factories all around, one factory must have been a coffee brewery, and one a bread bakery. The school was in an old building, brick, and labeled with one of those fallout shelter signs, and it had big windows. In the spring, when the weather was warm the windows were open and the smell of fresh bread and freshly ground coffee would rise above the street dust and truck exhaust. Since then, the smell of coffee and warm bread makes me think of big safe old buildings and warm spring sun.
What's the oldest digital camera photo you have on your computer? When is it from? Let's see it!
Its from November 27, 2002. From a rainy weekend in Provincetown, Mass with my then-gf Marie. Despite the rain, we had a fabulous weekend wandering around the tiny (and very gay) Cape Cod town and hiking through the sand dunes.
I had a Vectrex. I think it was my favorite, because even when I was 8 years old, I was pretty sure I could figure out how it worked if I took it apart.
I only had two games - Mine Storm was the one that was preloaded. I'm not sure what the other one was. Here's a screenshot of Mine Storm. Unfortunately, you can't experience the best part, which was the sounds the "defender" plane made as it flew across the screen. Imagine, roughly, a 1985 midi recording of iron roofing nails being scraped across a blackboard. Classic.
On my birthday:
"Three Times a Lady" is a 1978 single from the funk/soul group the Commodores, from their album Natural High. It was produced by James Carmichael and the Commodores. Lionel Richie wrote the song after hearing his father give a speech at his thirty-seventh wedding anniversary. It became the Commodores's first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit, topping the chart for two weeks beginning on August 12, 1978. It was also the only Motown song to reach the Top 10 that year. The song has since became a wedding standard.
Well, I'm glad it was motown, and not "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, which came later that year.
On my 21st:
"Genie in a Bottle" is the first single from Christina Aguilera's debut album, Christina Aguilera. As her first major single, the song is generally considered her debut single (although technically she had released two songs prior to this).
I don't even remember this song, which may be appropriate considering the birthday.
My family has always called me Gabe. Take from that what you will.
I make good ravioli's. From scratch.
